Again the call is going out for term limits. Term limits are an attractive idea, but I see some problems. You end up with a "lame duck" representative toward the end of their term, and knowing that they can not stand for election would make them less responsive to their constituents.
I think I have a better idea. Time limits.
Most of us agree that Congress is out of touch with real America. How can they not be? The spend most of their time in Washington talking to each other. What are they doing there most of the year? Spending our money and making laws that restrict our freedoms and impede our success.
What if they only had three months of the year to do the business of the country? Would that not cause them to focus on the real problems? Gone would be the inquiries into baseball steroid use. Gone, all the committee meetings and endless wrangling on who gets what pork, in exchange for which vote.
I see no reason to have them spending most of the year in Washington with big expense accounts and huge staff allowances. Let them keep their health plan and even their salaries. Take from them their travel expense accounts, jets, and other perks. We pay for all that. If they want something, let them come to us and ask us. I bet if they are forced to live among us, they will be less apt to feel free to spend our money as they do. They might even figure out what real life is like. One can only hope....
